#The  “4C’s” and a Global Perspective
Last month, you heard about our new global Corporate Identity  guidelines, and the GL codes that will help us better track marketing  allocation and spend.  In this month's Marketing Matters, Bob discusses  FY11 Marketing Plans in context of the "4C's" Framework.   All of our Marketing executions in FY11 will be tied to these four  goals:      
  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Consistency
  • Commitment

Bob will also share his observations from recent visits to Australia,  Singapore, the U.K., and Netherlands. Each of these Westcon/Comstor  offices, as well as many others, are doing some amazing things, whether  it be empowering employees as "brand ambassadors",  building stronger relationships with our partners, implementing  innovative practices, focusing on our vendors as "our customer",  achieving superior sales performance while expanding into new markets,  and implementing new practices like reverse logistics in Houten and  Quick-e-Quote in Sydney.

In next month's Marketing Matters, you'll hear about Marketing Maps  and Voice-of-the-Customer surveys. Marketing Maps is a framework that  focuses on improving alignment between Sales, Marketing, and our  Vendors. Voice-of-the-Customer surveys are a standardized, global  feedback process that provides insight on our performance, as well as  looking for ways to continuously improve our customer interactions and  business model.

LComstor_NL-signMM2.jpgast month the new Westcon and Comstor Corporate Identity guidelines were released,  and this month, the Houten, Netherlands office "swung" into action by  hoisting the new Comstor logo atop their building. 

The new, energy saving, Comstor logo is now on the roof of our office  building in Houten, Netherlands. Check out the following video which  filmed the construction crew as the logo was being hoisted to the roof.   For those of you who have been to Houten, you know that the building is  right next to a very busy highway so it has a lot of views from  bypassing traffic every day. Talk about our brand in action!

#Bill Hurley Gets Social
For those of you who haven't  seen it yet, Bill Hurley, our Westcon Group CTO hosts a blog where he  posts his insights, observations and recommendations on important issues  facing business & technology leaders. The goal of his blog is to  keep our partners, customers and employees informed of the issues that  business leaders face today. Feel free to post your opinion on any of  these topics. 

While Bill generally posts a new topic every Sunday, his post from  last week is particularly relevant to those of us who are marketers.  Titled "Needs Based Segmentation", it stresses  the importance of truly understanding your customer's needs, and how  this understanding can help define and drive messaging.

#Implementing  Reverse Logistics in Houten
We opened a  new warehouse facility in Houten, Netherlands, in 2007 to perform  Reverse Logistics and Value Added Services for our customers.

Logistics Services are part of the core business associated with  the collection and return of customers used or end of life equipment for  re-use, trade-in, re-cycle, refurbish and or re-marketing. However,  these Logistics Services have remained unknown to most of our sales  teams and also to most of our customers.

We are working to create some marketing material such as: a movie,  brochure, customer testimonials, banners on the websites and mailers.   We would be very happy if the sales teams would like to visit us in  Houten so we can show them the work we are doing for our customers.   Specific value added service offerings include:

  • Advanced pre-staging and soak testing of new equipment.
  • Pre-configuration of routers, switches, security and storage  appliances.
  • Drop-shipment, customised labeling and documentation.
  • Packaging, box and labour provisioning.
  • Global Customer RMA Collection service.
  • Product screening to determine equipment serviceability.
  • De-bundling and De-staging services for the removal of  software, memory and Integrated components.
  • Minor repairs and refurbishment.
  • Vendor trade-in.
  • Recycling and disposal.

Quick-e-Quote-Sidney.pngQuick-e-Quote is an easy to use, email based  valid quotation service which provides instantaneous customised pricing  to all our customers 24x7.

When a client emails Quick-e-Quote we recognise the senders email  address from our e-Commerce portal and locate the account number for  their trading account. The pricing is sourced from our downloadable  pricelists which is maintained by our ERP (advanced pricing module) so  it delivers customised best price information, real-time stock  availability and ETAs.

This service is free for our reseller partners and complements our  existing pricing resources i.e. presales quote team, e-Commerce portal,  downloadable pricelist.

#Imagine Event Roadshow Wraps  Up Another Year In Australia

Imagine_Event_Sydney.jpgWhat  a brilliant way to wrap up the Imagine  Roadshow with close to 300 people through the door in Melbourne.

Thank you to the entire business for your support, physical  involvement and joint promotion of this event. I don’t believe there is a  single person in the company who has not touched the event in some way  and contributed to its outstanding success. This is a true endorsement  of what our business is capable of as individuals and a team.   In total we collected data on close to 1100 registered attendees.

The Imagine Roadshow has acted as an excellent  vehicle to position Westcon Group as a true thought leader and quality  advisory for Converged Networking Security and Storage technologies. Westcon Group Captures Avaya EMEA Distributor of the Year

Last week we received some very good news from Avaya, having been selected as its EMEA Distributor of the Year (please see press release below). This would of course be welcome news in and of itself, but it is an even greater achievement when you consider that Westcon (and its acquired companies) has achieved this distinction no less than FIVE YEARS IN A ROW. Congratulations to the entire Westcon Convergence team on a job well done. CommsBusiness (UK): Westcon Challenge Nets Charity Cash (16 September 2008)

From September 5th-7th, the Westcon Warriors team comprising of Sandy Pringle, Tom Lawrence, Runa Macleod of Westcon and Adam Young of reseller G3 took on the Cap Gemini Wild UK Challenge in aid of the Princes Trust. In what can only be described as appalling conditions, the team battled to hike, bike and kayak over 100 miles across rough terrain from Minehead, Somerset to Exmouth on the coast of Devon.

IT Web (SA): Acquisition of 50.01% stake in Indian distributor (12 September 2008)

Datatec ("Datatec" or the "Group", JSE and LSE: DTC), the international ICT group, has acquired a 50.01% stake in Inflow Technologies Private ("Inflow"), an Indian ICT distribution business. The remaining 49.99% will continue to be held by management and other existing shareholders.

CRN (NL): Avaya: 'meer indirecte verkoop en services' (12 September 2008)

Dit maakte de leverancier bekend op de Avaya partnerconferentie dat dit jaar in Madrid werd gehouden. Er waren een aantal Nederlandse partners aanwezig, zoals @voicetec, Imtech, NewTel en KPN. 78 procent van de hardware gaat al indirect, dat moet nu 85 procent worden. Services worden nog voor 20 procent indirect verkocht, maar ook dat moet omhoog.

CRN (UK): Indian summer for Westcon (11 September 2008)

Networking distributor Westcon is set to take the Indian market by storm after parent Datatec acquired a 50.01 per cent stake in local hero Inflow Technologies. It is not the first time Westcon has taken a cautious approach to expansion in developing territories by opting not to acquire outright. Last August, the distributor set up a networking distribution joint venture with Turkish broadliner Index Group (channelweb, 2 August).

Business Solutions (U.S.): Connect Your Customers’ Satellite Offices With VoIP (September 2008)

Stoffel Equipment is a forklift dealer with headquarters in Milwaukee and satellite locations throughout the state. Each location used a different phone system and telephone service provider. This diversity prevented Stoffel from reaching its goal of using the company’s Milwaukee headquarters as a central call center, with the ability to connect clients with representatives in any one of its satellite locations.

ARN (Australia): ARN IT Industry Awards: The distributor finalists (18 August 2008)

Some of Australia’s biggest and most specialised distributors are up for Distributor of the Year honours at this year’s ARN’s IT Industry Awards. In the Hardware category, last year’s winner and distribution giant, Ingram Micro, is pegged up against 2007 Specialist Distributor of the Year, Altech, along with Express Data, Synnex and Westcon Group.

Cybercrime issues rising
Finjan's Web security survey of 1387 IT/Security professionals conducted during July 2008 showed cybercrime as a rising issue.  The results reveal that an overwhelming number of respondents perceive cybercrime as a major business risk, specifically the possibility of their sensitive information such as customer, patient, and employee data being stolen by crimeware.

WLAN intrusion systems boom
The worldwide wireless LAN (WLAN) intrusion prevention system (IPS) market is on pace to reach $168 million in 2008, a 41 per cent increase from 2007 revenue of $119 million, according to Gartner.  Wireless networks remain a potentially significant vulnerability for organisations as a continuing stream of WLAN-based security incidents has demonstrated.

CEE server growth jumps
According to IDC's EMEA Quarterly Server Tracker, factory revenue in the EMEA server market grew 8.7% year over year to $4.4 billion in the second quarter of 2008. Shipments grew 12.4% to reach nearly 700,000, 95.5% of which were x86 boxes. The overall server market results in EMEA presented the highest growth since the first quarter of 2007 in factory revenue terms and since the third quarter of 2005 when looking at unit volumes, despite the overall slowing economy.

Westcon Group has been awarded Cisco Learning Solutions Partner Status.A Cisco Learning Solutions Partner (CLSP) is the highest level partner authorised by Cisco to offer official technical, product, sales, and/or solutions training. CLSPs are closely aligned with Cisco Partner Development and Education (PDE), Learning Cisco, and product teams, have access to Cisco intellectual property and are qualified to create, customise and deliver training using Cisco Certified Systems Instructors (CCSI).

Blue Coat reports success in merger
Blue Coat has reported another quarter of record net revenue of $102.5 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2009, a 16% increase compared to net revenue of $88.2 million reported in the prior quarter.

Some 20,000 Linksys global channel partners will become part of the Cisco Channel Partner Programme and the benefits and obligations that come with that. As a “natural evolution of the Cisco small and medium-sized business (SMB) go-to-market strategy”, Cisco says that it is incorporating the Linksys Small-Business Channel Partner Program services and assets into the Cisco Channel Partner Program.

Nortel buys UC specialist Pingtel
Nortel has bought US-based Pingtel, a designer of software-based unified communications solutions and owned by enterprise mobility solutions provider BlueSocket. Pingtel will provide new software capabilities to Nortel’s enterprise unified communications portfolio, as well as additional research and development capabilities. Pingtel previously had an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) relationship with Nortel.

The market for VoIP and hosted telephony is maturing but not exactly at a pace that suits suppliers needing to see a return on the heavy investments they have made. Data services grows but mobile operators must respond
New research from Informa reveals that revenues from mobile data services are set to exceed USD 200 billion in 2008 for the first time. Informa’s “Telecoms & Media's World Cellular Data Metrics” report suggests that mobile operators now generate approximately one fifth of their revenue from data services.

Almost half of businesses are unaware of what telephony fraud is or take no measures to protect against it, despite 40% acknowledging that their telephony network has faced security threats in the last year. Remarkably, only 17% monitored their voice network constantly, yet 40% of businesses admitted to having suffered financially because of this lack of security.

Cisco Sales Up
Cisco Systems’ forecast for the first half of the current fiscal year showed signs of a pullback in customer spending. It reported a 4% increase in quarterly profit, beating analysts' expectations, but signaled that the weak economy would affect results in the next few quarters.

Over 90% of Europe’s senior business managers say they are more likely to choose a supplier that makes its customer service functions available 24/7, according to independent research commissioned by Avaya.  In fact, more than 89% of respondents surveyed indicated they are willing to pay premium prices for “always-on” access.

f5 Upbeat on Results
During Q3, solid top line results marked F5’s 22nd consecutive quarter of sequential growth, driven by strong execution in its core business. Revenue for the third quarter of fiscal 2008 was $165.6 million, above the guided range. Product revenue of $114.8 million represented 69% of total revenue. Service revenue of $50.8 million accounted for 31%. Book to bill for the quarter was greater than one.

Europe's PC Sales Soar
IDC has reported continued market expansion with EMEA PC shipments increasing by a robust 24.5% year-on-year. There is buoyant demand for mobility which has driven notebook growth at 53.5% amid overall economic pressure, it says. In analysis of the second quarter PC results, it says this quarter also benefited from the additional momentum created by the arrival of low-cost ultra-portables, which boosted consumer notebook growth.

New survey shows benefit of going green
A new survey entitled "Green Networking Equipment: Who Leads and Who Lags" has proved the idea that networks committed to becoming more energy efficient can save money. The study carried out by independent research firm In-Stat found that that LAN switches from 3Com are up to 60% more energy efficient than competitive products, allowing customers to save money and help the environment by using less electricity.

Just one year after the Wi-Fi Alliance introduced 802.11n draft 2.0 certification, the upward trajectory of this next-generation Wi-Fi technology continues unabated. Nearly 50% of Wi-Fi chipsets sold this year are expected to adhere to the new draft standard -- double the number from 2007.

Wireless Products go Up Market
With more revenue from fewer shipped wireless local area network infrastructure units, it is clear that higher-priced 802.11n products are moving ahead strongly. According to Infonetics Research, the market – which includes independent and dependent access points and wireless LAN switches and controllers – hit an all-time high of $499 million last quarter, up 1% on the fourth quarter of 2007.

Internal threat remains high
Research at the Infosecurity Europe show last month shows that most IT directors are much more worried by internal threats than hackers. When asked whether they believed insider or outsider threats posed a bigger problem to their organisation, more than 80% of the 103 Directors surveyed prioritise insider threats (defined as either unintentional data leakage or deliberate data theft).

Security barrier to enterprise mobility
Apple’s iPhone has reignited the debate over ‘consumerization’ - when new technologies are introduced into the consumer market and then brought into the enterprise market - with employees determined to integrate their personal devices with their enterprise applications. However, IT managers are reluctant to take on the responsibility of managing these devices. This is according to a new report by independent market analyst Datamonitor.

New head of sales and marketing at Avaya
Avaya has appointed Todd Abbott to lead its global sales and field marketing organisations. Abbott was named senior vice president and president, Field Operations. Abbott joins Avaya from Seagate Technology, where he was executive vice president, Sales, Marketing and Customer Service.

Extreme networks in demand
Could Enterasys be ready to buy Extreme Networks? Extreme Networks’ shares have jumped 18 cents, or 5.9%, to $3.25 in one day; with volumes totalling 2.56 million shares, about triple the daily average. According to one institutional investor in the shares, there are rumours that the company might be an acquisition target for private held Enterasys, which has apparently said that it is actively hunting for acquisitions.

Avaya adds speech control
Members of the growing mobile workforce can keep their eyes on the road and safely stay connected to the office using speech commands and their own, “personal assistant,” Avaya has announced. The ‘freedom of speech’ is now provided at no additional cost with the company’s latest version of Avaya’s industry-leading unified messaging platform, and is anther step in democratising unified communications. Avaya Modular Messaging 4.0 now includes the Avaya one-X Speech interface to a personal assistant, providing hands-free access to calling and conferencing capabilities, voice, email and fax messaging, enterprise directories and databases, calendars, contacts and task lists – from any telephone.

Meru Networks has introduced a network management software product that lets users "walk" through three-dimensional representations of their Meru wireless LAN deployments, seeing detailed, real-time, color-coded views of network coverage and signal propagation patterns throughout buildings, across campuses and even in remote sites.

PC shipments jump in Q1
Worldwide PC shipments totaled 71.1 million units in the first quarter of 2008, a 12.3% increase from the first quarter of 2007, according to preliminary results by Gartner. “The US results were in line with our expectation, indicating that the PC market was modestly affected by the US recession, although there was no fundamental change in market conditions,” said Mika Kitagawa, principal analyst for Gartner’s Client Computing Markets group.

RSA is offering new capabilities in data loss prevention through the RSA Data Loss Prevention (DLP) Suite. eChannelLine (CN): Westcon extends Juniper Networks distribution agreement to Canada (24 March 2008)

Westcon Group has extended its distribution relationship with Juniper Networks to Canada. This announcement follows only about a month on the heels of Westcon's announcement that it had extended its distribution agreement with Juniper to include all of its European geographies. According to Anthony Daley, executive vice president of the Americas at Westcon Group, the distributor is making a point of being able to offer global distribution and capabilities for the vendors it works with.

Death of Leslie Boyd, Chairman of Datatec

Datatec Limited, parent company of the Westcon Group, has announced with great sadness that Leslie Boyd, the Group’s Chairman, has died suddenly after a short illness. Stephen Davidson, who was Deputy Chairman, will succeed to the role of Chairman. Leslie had indicated his intention to retire from the Board after the Group’s AGM in August at which time the Board had intended to appoint Stephen as Chairman.

A new independent report from global analyst firm Canalys shows that Avaya is the number one provider of communications solutions for small businesses – companies with 100 or fewer employees – in Europe and North America combined.
